The demolition of public architecture to clear ground for the highest bidder is once again to acknowledge that we are so inhumane that we see economic strength as the only true value in our society.

The planned demolition of the Yarra building at federation square, housing the Koorie Heritage Trust, is emblematic of the continued destruction of culturally significant architecture in Australia in favour of flagship establishments of the rich and powerful. White Australians consciously attempted a cultural genocide of first nation peoples which is still ongoing today and most egregious of all acts in this country. Although federation square should be subject to its own scrutiny, the demolition of public architecture to clear ground for the highest bidder is once again to acknowledge that we are so inhumane that we see economic strength as the only true value in our society and furthermore, through loopholes and slimy tactics, Apple pays less than 2% tax on their income in Australia alone contributing just over 100 million in tax on their 8,000 million annual income. For any sort of cultural progress, it’s time we acknowledge the damage Anglo Saxons have caused on the traditional owners of the land and prioritise how we can rectify the atrocities. We could start by not doing more cultural damage at federation square. We could continue by creating a platform to listen to Aboriginal Australians and learn about the culture that cultivated the most peaceful and sustainable society to ever exist on this planet, moving towards a more positive future for all.
