Dr Scott Robertson, President DOCOMOMO Australia

Federation Square should remain an intact building and urban ensemble as an important work of architecture and a community heart for Melbourne.

Docomomo Australia is extremely concerned about the proposal to demolish one of LAB Architecture Studio’s buildings at Melbourne’s Federation Square and replace it with a flat-roofed glass box.
Federation Square is a unified ensemble of buildings and urban spaces that has become one of the recognisable symbols of Melbourne and the scheme is an important milestone in the development of Melbourne (and Australian) Modernism. The proposed rectilinear glass box for Apple will destroy the current unity of multi-faceted architecture and urban spaces and irrevocably alter a highly recognisable and recognised cultural and community centre with the introduction of an overtly commercial building. Federation Square should remain an intact building and urban ensemble as an important work of architecture and a community heart for Melbourne.
