FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday 2 August 2019
Will the Fed Square review be enough for Our City, Our Square ?
Citizens for Melbourne applauds the announcement by Minister Martin Pakula this morning that the Fed Square review is going ahead.
It comes almost two years after the Apple megastore was first announced by the State Government. The Apple megastore was proposed without regard for the underlying issues facing Fed Square’s management.
The Our City, Our Square campaign wants to ensure that the community is a genuine part of the review process. We have a series of baseline requirements for the future of Fed Square. Over the coming weeks, we will be campaigning with our supporters, Melburnians who believe in public space.
Tania Davidge, President of Our City, Our Square, says:
“We welcome the review of Fed Square. The community now have the opportunity to be part of this important conversation about the future of our public square.”
“This review process that should have happened years ago. Now is the opportunity to get Fed Square’s governance, finances, and vision right.”
“We will be advocating for Fed Square to be funded like our other important public places - such as the Botanic Gardens and our world-class sporting and arts facilities.”
“Fed Square needs to be valued as a place for culture and community above all else and safeguarded as a uniquely Melbourne public and civic space.”
Citizens for Melbourne facilitated more than 10,000 public submissions and 100,000 signatures in support of Our City, Our Square – for Fed Square, not Apple Square.
